English name:Rheo, Moses in the cradle, Oysterplant, Purple-leaved spider wort.

Description of the plant: A stout herb with short stem. Leaves 30-45 X 4-6 cm, spirally aranged, lanceolate, acute, glabrous, dorsal surface green and the ventral surface purple. Flowers in axillary cymes,  enclosed by 3-5 cm long, purplish spathaceeous bracts exserted from tops of subtending leaf sheaths, petal colour white.

Herbal uses:The leaves of the plant are used to treat cancer.

Cook fresh leaves of the plant with sugar to stop diarrhoea and dysentery.

Poultice of leaves is used for asthma treatment.

A paste made with the leaves of the plant is applied to the affected areas to treat wounds.

Decoction prepared from the leaves of the plant is given for cough, cold, whooping cough,hemoptysis, and bronchitis treatment.

Distribution:It is commonly grown in gardens.
